Communications Trends that Are Transforming the Health Care Industry

When I think about the communications trends among our health care industry clients, one of the biggest emerging themes is collaboration: Hospitals and medical centers are looking for devices, applications and solutions that bring departments, agencies and sites together on the same platform so they can keep in touch to address situations.

Every health care client is different, and within those clients, each department has their own unique communications needs, from the emergency department, to facilities, valet and beyond. As I mentioned in a previous post about school transportation, all of our communications solutions are custom built for each client. Part of our challenge then is to develop systems that work well for each client and all of its parts.

It’s an exciting time to be working in health care, and here are the communications trends that are transforming the industry:

Anatomy of a Great Healthcare Communications System

Posted by Lisa MacGillivray

Monday, November 21, 2016

A great healthcare communications system can act as the hidden hero in staff, patient and visitor safety, security and privacy. A great system not only delivers instant, reliable communication, it’s tailored to the unique needs of the healthcare environment.

That’s why digital two-way radios and applications, as well as a strong wireless network, are must-haves for healthcare facilities and campuses. Two-way radio solutions are less expensive and more cost-effective than cell phones, and they can be scaled from the simple to the robust depending on what features and functionality are enabled. A strong wireless network will provide the backbone for all of your communications.

Healthcare-specific solutions will also offer HIPAA-compliant encryption capabilities for all communications. With all of that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the anatomy of a great healthcare communications system.

Workplace Safety Tips: How Communicating Can Save Lives

Posted by Lisa MacGillivray

Wednesday, September 28, 2016

Most lists of workplace safety tips focus on the physical: proper posture, the importance of the right safety gear, the need to take regular breaks. But what about workplace safety that relates to communication, not just technology, but workers’ ability to effectively relate to each other?

A National Public Radio story recently relayed how Shell drastically improved worker safety on oil rigs in the 1990s by transforming rig culture with an unorthodox approach: They got workers to be vulnerable with each other by communicating more openly.

Through a series of intense and emotional sessions, oil rig workers were encouraged to open up to each other about their lives and struggles. That vulnerability led to more honest communication about a host of other things, which led to more opportunities to keep themselves safe. And it contributed to a lower accident rate and higher productivity.

Video Surveillance Solutions for Education and Health Care

Monday, June 6, 2016

We all know that video surveillance solutions are among the most effective security strategies for education and health care, but as systems age, it can be a challenge to cost effectively upgrade and prepare for the future, especially if you need to keep legacy systems up and running.

As security needs and technology change, many educational and health care institutions are finding it necessary to either replace their fleets of aging cameras or upgrade their functionality. Many are choosing Axis network products because their capabilities, flexibility and reliability match the needs of the  education and  health care sectors. Here are some of the useful features offered with Axis products:

Customer Service In Healthcare: Speed Is Key

Posted by Lisa MacGillivray

Thursday, April 21, 2016

While the healthcare industry refers to the people it serves as patients, the customer service mentality is key. When people feel they've gotten excellent customer service in healthcare systems, that often means they got excellent medical care.

At Chicago-based Presence Health system, Corporate Security Director Nick Kowal says the top customer service skills that set their health system apart are  addressing patient complaints quickly and being sensitive to their needs, from the time they’re admitted to after they return home.

Great customer service - in healthcare and in every industry - isn’t just about how you and your staff behave when things are going smoothly, it’s also about how you face challenges and complaints. Employees should acknowledge complaints immediately, keep customers frequently updated about the status of the issue and, perhaps most importantly, be empowered to resolve situations.

Why Your Healthcare System Needs Digital Communications Technology

Posted by Lisa MacGillivray

Thursday, October 29, 2015

The larger an organization or network becomes, the more complex its communications needs become. While this offers a significant challenge Healthcarefor many industries, it weighs especially heavy for those in healthcare.

Security, in-building communication, multi-campus communication - all of these activities become more challenging as a health network expands to more campuses or a single hospital adds a new wing, for example. And, while the obvious need is to best serve patients (even save their lives), hospital administrators are also faced with controlling costs and streamlining any process that they can - something that outdated technology can hinder.

Unfortunately, many healthcare systems still rely on outdated analog technology, or, they do use newer technologies, but in the wrong ways. For example, campus security officers who use analog radios will run into common issues such as:

  • Limited range
  • Poor signal within large buildings
  • Lack of immediate notification ability (Push-to-Talk)
